A Network Interface Card is basically a type of hardware component which connects to the host computer system to provide the functionality of being able to log into a computer network environment. These types of hardware components can be represented internally or externally and can provide either wired or wireless connection. For the 3Com 3C1000 Gigabit NIC it plugs directly into a vacant PCI slot on the computer motherboard to provide wired Ethernet connection that can reach data transfer speeds of up to 1000 megabits per second.
